A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine that is somewhat like a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machinery are mostly utilized in a warehouse environment. Usually they are used for moving pallets and doing specific jobs in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines can be raised to the required level which makes it very convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials required, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then whole platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts may be utilized to complete these particular jobs at some companies instead.
